Coffee and a mince pie to finishPub chain JD Wetherspoon has sparked fears it is encouraging binge drinking by selling beer at just 99p a pint.
It is re-running its controversial ‘January sale’ campaign from last year – but this time it is extending the 99p deal to include glasses of wine and shots of gin.
It comes just a week after it emerged that almost a million people were admitted to hospital for drink-related reasons last year.Charities have condemned pubs which slash drink prices as ‘irresponsible’, saying it simply encourages people to drink more. Drink is already 60 per cent lower than it was in real terms in 1980.
Wetherspoon’s website says it will run its ‘sale’ for two weeks - from January 4 to 19 – at ‘selected venues’ out of its 752 stores.
Customers will be able to buy Greene King Ruddles for 99p a pint – as well as bottles of lager, glasses of wine and shots of gin.
Discounted meals will also be available. Last year, the deal was five meals for £2.99.
A statement on the website said: ‘We all love a bargain after Christmas; just heading off to the January sales is now as traditional as Christmas itself.
‘So, already the best value in town, we are making sure that you can enjoy some even bigger savings at our sale. There's something for everyone - with top-brand drinks and value meals on offer.’
Last year, Wetherspoons sold Green King IPA for 99p a pint. But the brewer was annoyed, saying it devalued its flagship brand. In the end Wetherspoons changed to Green King Ruddles to placate the Suffolk company.
The last time draft beer was available for less than a pound, on average, was in 1989.
There is growing concern that discount offers on alcohol in supermarkets and off-licences has led to a surge in binge drinking and drink-related violence.
There is growing concern that discount offers on alcohol in supermarkets and off-licences has led to a surge in binge drinking and drink-related violence.
Last year, charity Alcohol Concern condemned Wetherspoons’ move, saying that if the drinks industry did not regulate itself, the government should step in.
But ministers have turned down pleas from chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson to set a minimum price for alcohol, saying it would penalise responsible drinkers.
Don Shenker, chief executive of Alcohol Concern, said: 'Alcohol is not an ordinary commodity like bread or milk.

'Alcohol causes harm to the nation's health and economy, and there appears to be a strong link between cheap alcohol and the high levels of binge drinking.'
Wetherspoons was unavailable for comment yesterday, but last year chief executive John Hutson, defended the move, claiming the firm was trying to help people in the economic slump.
'We believe our food and drink prices will allow people to enjoy a visit to a Wetherspoon pub without it costing them too much,' he said.
Last week it was revealed that the number of people admitted to hospital because of alcohol is approaching a million a year.
Drink-related admissions have soared by 47 per cent in just five years, with some parts of the country experiencing double the number of admissions than others.
Although the figures include patients with alcohol-related conditions such as liver disease, certain cancers and alcohol poisoning, they do not take into account those injured while drunk or the victims of drink-related violence.
The statistics, uncovered by the Liberal Democrats, show that in 2008/09, 945,223 people were admitted with an alcohol-related diagnosis - 47 per cent higher than the 644,185 taken to hospital in 2004/05.
Mr Shenker said: 'This is a shocking indictment on the Government's failure to tackle harms from alcohol misuse.
What a place. Full of diamond geezers and people with few teeth. They should change the name to the DHSS Arms. The place has been upgraded, a bigger choice of real ales and less "all day drinkers".but it seems they are still thereStill I wouldn't visit the place in the evening.Popped in at the end of May late but that was a mistake, mongs behind the bar and mongs in front of it.top marks for the name of the place and also for the yummy pint of Whitstable ale quaffed. Shame bout the seriously pathetic slow service from the mongs but mind you it was due to only one girl serving and the usual idiots ordering coffee's!
I used to Use this place a lot,and it can be really up and down, even dangerous.Last visit they had both bars open, and only one person serving both.We left 20 mins later without a drink.
Other visits have been great, food is ok,prices are not good anymore, you might as well visdit a proper boozer for the extra 50 p where you won't encounter Del Boy at 25 stone giving it large at the bar.,the drinks were very competitive.Don't expect miracles, but do expect value for money and its not really there anymore.
As for Margate, yes it's a dive, but if you do happen to be here this pub is near the front, and vhe station.
'The Government must take strong measures on the affordability and availability of alcohol to reduce the unnecessary burden on the NHS and improve everyone's health. i never ever fucking saw 99 p a drink in wetherspoons i saw fucking 1.95 for their cheapest pint in August.
