cleaning shoes the vass way

Cleaning
Remove any laces before beginning. Laces can be cleaned separately or replaced if they are in really bad shape. Then remove dirt and dust by cleaning with a leather cleaner made specifically for smooth leathers. You can use saddle soap or a smooth leather shoe cleaner. As well you can use a soft shoe brush to aid in removing dirt from the surface of the shoe. This will also help to remove dirt from any cracks in the shoes. After having cleaned with some water, let the shoes dry for a few minutes and begin shining them with a soft cotton cloth.

Creaming
Shoe polish paste like Burgol is the longest lasting. In order to work the paste in we recommend you the use of a small brush, mostly made of horsetail hair. Occasionally you can take liquid shoe polish for keeping the leather in good maintenance.

Colours
Of course you'll need to get the appropriate colour of polish for your footwear, which helps preventing spots. You can find a variety of shoe polishes from Burgol at our internet-shop. Apply the polish to a small, less conspicuous area of the shoe to test and be sure the colour is right. For giving a light brown shoe an antique appearance, you may use a darker tone. The same procedure you can apply with dark brown coloured shoes or it is also suitable to mix brown and some black paste. This mixture is worked in round and round until the special tone appears. Light colours will be treated only with cleaning polish or clear shoe paste.

Polish
For reaching a mirror finish you can deal with a mixture of paste and some water together with a used clean cotton around your finger. Work it in a circling way, reducing the creaming part until high gloss is visible. The best finish you will get passing over with a polishing sponge and a polishing brush thus removing the particles preventing high gloss. In pulling a sock over the brush high result is achieved.

Leathersoles
From once in a while you ought to work in leather oil on your leather sole thus nourishing it and keep it comfortable and elastic. Especially this is recommended after a rainy walk.

Shoetrees

Shoe Removing
Always put your shoes on and off with a shoe horn and untighten your laces enough.

A few Tips for practice: Practical Recommendation:

Extend the life of your shoes with protective soles. These are very thin rubber or leather -soles applied over the sole of each shoe to make it longer wearing. Practice preventive maintenance. Repair your shoes always before daily wearing turns into damage.

Buy new shoes in the evening. Feet increase in size by 5-8 per cent by the end of the day.

In average a man measures about 8,000 steps a day. If he weighs approximately 170 pounds, the daily force that accumulates on his feet is 1,000 TONS. Spend a few extra dollars for shoes that will give you the support you need. Here are the "don'ts" of shell cordovan care:
1. Never use "neutral" polish
2. Never clean cordovan shoes using saddle soap
3. Never attempt to clean cordovan shoes using petroleum distillates or cleaning fluids
4. Never use any spray shines or aerosol type waterproofs
5. Never attempt to dry wet shell cordovan shoes with heat or a heater. Wipe them dry or allow them to dry by air

Shoetrees
Keep shoetrees in your shoes when you're not wearing them. Put the shoetrees in immediately when you take off your shoes. The trees will give better effect if the leather is warm
