how to make trouers

    • Take your old favorite pair of trousers and a pair of scissors. Cut the trousers apart at the waistband seam, removing the waistband from the top of the trousers. Cut the left and right fly pieces off the front of the trousers. Set these aside to use as pattern pieces.
    • 2
Cut the remaining leg pieces up the center seam, from the fly opening to the back waistband edge. Discard one of the leg pieces. Cut the other leg piece along the side seam and inseam, so that you have a front and back piece. Add these to your pattern piece pile.
    • 3
Iron all pattern pieces flat to remove the wrinkles. Lay out your trouser fabric in a double layer on a flat surface, then place all pattern pieces on top of the fabric, following the grain line. Make sure to lay the waistband piece with the top against a fold.
    • 4
Trace around the outside of each pattern piece with a fabric pencil, then remove the pattern pieces. Add seam allowances of 1/2 inch to all sides of each pattern piece, except for the bottom of the leg pieces. Add seam allowances of one inch to the bottom of the leg pieces.
    • 5
Cut the trouser pieces from the fabric along the outside lines.

    Sew the Pieces

    • 1
Take the front leg pieces and pin them to the back leg pieces along the inside seam, keeping the right sides of the fabric pressed together. Stitch along this seam on each leg, and iron the seam allowances flat. Open the leg pieces and lay them together, right sides touching.
    • 2
Measure the fly placement on the original pattern pieces from your old pair of trousers, and make a mark this distance from the top of the legs on the center front seam, or crotch seam. Stitch this seam together from front to back, starting at the marking. Press the seam allowances flat.
    • 3
Pin the outside seams of each leg together and stitch them, then press the seam allowances flat. Turn the legs right side out.
    • 4
Pin the left fly piece to the open left front edge of the crotch seam and stitch it down. Pin the zipper to the right front edge, then pin the right fly piece over the zipper. Stitch through all layers on the right side, attaching the zipper and fly piece to the right front edge.
    • 5
Sew the free left side of the zipper to the raw edge on the left fly piece.

    Stitch the Details

    • 1
Pin the raw edges of the waistband piece to the top of the legs, folding the short edges inside the waistband to match the front of the legs. Stitch the waistband to the legs and top stitch the short edges.
    • 2
Press the waistband flat. Mark the placement for the button and buttonhole on the front edges of the waistband with the fabric pencil.
    • 3
Sew a buttonhole onto the front edge, using the buttonhole function on your sewing machine. Cut the center of the buttonhole open with a pair of scissors or a seam ripper.
    • 4
Sew a button to the opposite front edge to match the buttonhole. Hand stitch the button with a heavy-duty thread for the best stability.
    • 5
Turn up the hems of the legs 1/2 inch, then another 1/2 inch. Stitch along the folded edges and press the hems flat.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your trousers have pockets, remember to cut out the pocket pieces from your original pair of trousers. Stitch the pocket pieces together and attach them to the trouser legs before the waistband is sewn
