''I stepped into a soap opera, and I lived in it for quite a long time. I'll probably be more eloquent on it ten years from now,' the director said in an interview with U.S magazine 'The experience was ultimately very positive. I love the kids that came out of it, and I could see no other route to take. But you move on, don't you?' 

He expands on why his marriage to the 53-year-old singer didn't work out.At the end of the day, the Sherlock Holmes director says he learned a lot from Madonna. 

'When you end up with a lot of the things you set out to chase and find that you've stumbled into all sorts of hollow victories, then you become deeply philosophical,' he said.

He added: 'I'm quite happy that that experience was accelerated for me. I'm glad I made money, in other words. And I'm glad I got married.' 

He wed the superstar in a lavish 2000 ceremony at Skibo Castle in Scotland. 

They announced their split in October of 2008; the divorce was finalised in January 2009. 

The two have since moved on with other partners and each has a new child.The director and his new model girlfriend, Jacqui Ainsley, welcomed a baby boy in September. 

Madonna is seeing toyboy Brahim Zaibat, who, at 24, is less than half her age.  

Since splitting from her second husband - she was previously married to Sean Penn - Madonna adopted daughter Mercy James from Malawi in June 2009.

She is also the mother of 15-year-old Lourdes Leon, her daughter with Cuban personal trainer Carlos Leon.

The singer said that at the start things were ‘flawless’ but as the years rolled on she began to notice ‘cracks in the veneer’.

She began to have doubts and realised that marriage ‘wasn’t what I thought it was going to be’.And come the end of their relationship all she could think about was the brutally blunt question: ‘How much am I willing to sacrifice?’ They had a son together, Rocco, 11, and adopted another boy, David Banda, six.

In an interview with Newsweek magazine, Madonna said that she was nearing the end of her marriage when she started writing her new film W.E. about the love affair between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII, her first major project since the split.At the time she said she was ‘certainly asking a kind of existential question that I think people ask when they’ve been married that long: what is the perfect love?’ 

She said: ‘Because when you start off, everything’s great and lovely, and the person you’ve married is flawless, and you’re flawless. 

‘Then time goes by, and you share a life, you have children, and there are cracks in the veneer. 

‘It’s not as romantic as it used to be. You think, ‘This isn’t what I thought it was going to be,’ and ‘How much am I willing to sacrifice?’’ 

Madonna’s comments are a rare insight into her marriage, but Ritchie has been far more vocal about their relationship in the past.

He has said that whilst he does not regret his time with her, the drama was too much and that their life became a ‘soap opera’.Friends of his have also claimed that her strict diet, her Kabbalah religion and obsession with yoga made it hard to live with her.

Madonna, who has four children in total, is currently dating dancer Brahim Zaibat, who at 24 is 29 years her junior.

She said in a recent interview that she is actually still a romantic and hoped one day to be 'swept away by a knight in shining armour'.

Ritchie is dating model Jacqui Ainsley and the couple had a baby son in September.

Meanwhile, on Tonight’s Jay Leno show, Madonna spoke about one of her most iconic past performances. 

The singer revealed how her infamous rendition of Like A Virgin at the 1984 Video Music Awards was not all planned – in fact flashing her underwear was an accident.

Madonna, who was looking demure in a sparkling shift dress which just below the knee and a pair of Christian Louboutin heels explained the incident.She said: ‘Here’s what happened. I was standing at the top of a wedding cake, as one does, and I walked down these steps, which were the tiers of a wedding cake. And I lost my shoe. I lost my white stiletto. And I thought, 'Oh god, how am I gonna get that? It's over there and I'm on TV.'’

‘So I thought well, I'll just pretend I meant to do this and I dove on to the floor and I rolled around and I reached for the shoe. And as I reached for the shoe, the dress went up. And the underpants were showing.... I didn't mean to.

Leno noted: ‘And it became the greatest night in television history.’

Earlier, it emerged that Elton John offered the signer some rather unfriendly advice ahead of her Superbowl performance.

Viewers have been treated to a sneak peak of Madona's new song which will be seen on Thursday night's American Idol show ahead of her performance at the Super bowl.At the Vanity Fair Oscars night party in the Sunset Tower Hotel, the scene was pure Hollywood.

This seems to have been Penn's idea of a joke, but it could not have been better designed to humiliate his former wife, who was been globally criticised for adopting Malawian boy David Banda.

'At least I can act!' he fired back. In truth, both were utterly obnoxious on the set. The publicist quit after two days, saying: 'Penn is an arrogant little creep, and his wife goes along with him.'

Former Beatle George Harrison, whose company was producing the movie, reportedly had to fly out to Hong Kong to tell them to grow up and start behaving.Though Penn would have many tantrums over the media attention they attracted, the real meat of his rages seemed to centre on who was in control in the relationship.

Madonna did not make an official complaint because Penn was about to serve a short jail term for attacking a film extra. He served 33 days of a 60-day sentence in the Los Angeles County jail (23 hours a day in solitary) for violating the probation he'd been given for punching a fan.

He was released into his wife's arms, only for her to throw him out of a taxi a few hours later after yet another set-to.

Their violent arguments were exhausting for everyone, but Madonna hesitated to admit that the marriage had failed. Though she saw lawyers about getting a divorce, she hung on for a full year to see if it could be saved.

It was a decision she would come to regret. In the late afternoon of December 28, 1989, Penn scaled the wall surrounding the Malibu house and found Madonna alone in the master bedroom.

According to a report filed by Madonna with the Malibu sheriff's office, the two began to quarrel. Penn told her he owned her 'lock, stock and barrel'.

When she told him she was leaving the house, he tried to bind her hands with an electric lamp and cord. Screaming and afraid, Madonna fled from the bedroom. What followed was a nine-hour ordeal which left her deeply shaken.

Penn chased her into the living room, caught her and bound her to a chair with heavy twine. Then he threatened to cut off her hair. 

According to the police report, Penn was 'drinking liquor straight from the bottle' and the abuse went on for several hours, during which time he smacked and roughed up his victim.

He went out to buy more alcohol, leaving Madonna bound and gagged. Some hours later, he returned and continued his attacks.

Madonna said that he untied her after she agreed to perform a degrading sex act on him. She then fled the house and ran to her car.

Penn ran after her and was banging on the windows of her Thunderbird while she spoke to police on her mobile phone. Fifteen minutes later, she staggered into the sheriff's office.

Lieut Bill McSweeny said: 'I hardly recognised her as Madonna. She was weeping, her lip was bleeding and she had obviously been struck.'

Penn was taken away in handcuffs and charged with inflicting 'corporal injury and traumatic conditions' on her, as well as committing 'battery'.

A week later, Madonna called her lawyers and told them to file divorce papers. Yet she also told Deputy District Attorney Lauren Weiss she wished to withdraw the assault charges against her husband.

The problem was not the publicity - the scandal was in all the papers. It seems she just couldn't bear to see Penn thrown into jail. She still believed that he was the love of her life, and she tortured herself wondering to what extent she was to blame for the abuse.

That perhaps explains why her brother Chris maintains that she has stayed half in love with Penn ever since. That could surely only be possible if she didn't hold him totally responsible for his actions.

The papers, filed in Marin County, Calif., on Aug. 12, state that "both parties have already agreed to [shared] custody" over their minor son, Hopper Jack, 16, and that "the estranged couple have already agreed to division of all property."   

The reason for the split is listed as "irreconcilable differences." Wright Penn, best known for roles in The Princess Bride andForrest Gump, is not seeking spousal support. 

Lawyers for both sides weren't immediately available for comment.

Together since 1989 and married in 1996, the couple endured a roller-coaster relationship, filing papers to initiate divorce not once, but twice – only to patch things up again as recently as May.

In an interview released Monday, the actress told More magazine that she had no plans to reconcile with her husband. "I hit that crossroad a while ago," she saidid. "I know what I don't want."
 

Regarding the much-discussed marriage of the two actors, friends tell Moremagazine for its September issue that the couple had a "peculiar chemistry." Penn Wright herself said, "I, we, have two amazing children we raised together."   

This fall, daughter Dylan Frances, 18, is headed off to college, with son Hopper Jack preparing to follow suit.
