The wearing of academic scarves is a tradition found at many British and Irish colleges and universities. Sets of two or more coloured stripes have traditionally been used as part of the distinctive visual identity of these institutions. The scarves are usually made of Saxony Wool and about 2 metres long. The college colours are used in clothing and symbols of all kinds, from ties to trophies, but notably in the long woollen winter scarves that students and alumni wear to show their pride in their institutions
With winter still knocking at our door and the snow season in full swing, it’s the perfect time to put on those heavy football scarves or striped Ivy college scarves . I’ve noticed, in the last few years, that the modern man has adopted the college or military scarf in larger numbers. Some will say that it has never really left. I don't want to insinuate that the college scarf ever went away, only that it's more present than ever.
In my personal experience, during the Revival years, I don't remember ever seing someone wearing a good college scarf, at least not in my parts, the footbal college scarves are perfect for wearing under a fish tail parka.
The Oxford/cambridge brand has long been associated with Mod culture and for a good reason; they look damn good! Personally, they’re my favorite. You can still find some quality vintage examples online that won’t pull at your purse strings. The choice of colors and patterns are practically limitless. Stripes you name it, and stripes they made it. When it comes to scarves, I’m partial to the late 60s Spurs look. What a way to make a parka in olive green pop out!
At some universities, in addition to collegiate scarves, there are also several non-collegiate scarves which have a well-established meaning. example, those representing the University in sport may be entitled to wear a particular scarf, depending on their level of achievement, or a university department or club may have its own scarf. In addition, some colleges and universities have (for example) separate scarves for senior clubs such as their Boat Clubs. We've talked about university etiquette. With winter still knocking at our door and the snow season in full swing, it’s the perfect time to put on those heavy football scarves or striped Ivy college scarves . but what about college scarves? I would never wear the colors of a university's college if I had not attended there.
However, what if one's colors are the same as a university's? For example, in Press's fall catalog, the UVA and Princeton scarves looked identical..at least in the picture.
What if (this is not true) I went to another orange-black school. Could I buy either of those scarves and not be seen as a poseur?
Or is there some subtletly of stripe width that differentiates a Tiger and a Cavalier and another alma mater?
Also, if one cannot just pick out one's colors from next fall's Press offerings, either because it's "wrong" to use another school's scarf with the same colors as your own, or because your colors aren't offered, is there a big website somewhere, like the ribbon belt site Harris once posted, that has the gold mine of college scarves? But who cares if you are a mod, we just wear them end of story

Now considered appropriate regardless of season, today, the scarf is on a similar level with statement jewelry or a great bag. Curious to see how the scarf evolved from something that was merely functional to something that’s simply fabulous? Keep reading!
