flowers

The Royal Horticultural Society, together with garden tools and equipment manufacturer Burgon & Ball, has created an ingenious small garden that can provide two adults with enough fruit and vegetables to meet their 5-a-day guidelines.

A full sized version will be on show at this year's Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, and a half scale version can be seen now at the RHS Plant Centre in Wisley.

By carefully selecting the most productive varieties and using the principles of the ‘Deep Bed’ method, plants can be spaced more closely, thereby reducing the planting area and making the '5-a-day' Garden (C158) a reality for all gardeners - in particular those who have limited space.

Deep bed growing

Using a series of Burgon & Ball’s Home Allotment® Raised Willow Planters, the 5-a-Day Garden replicates these deep bed conditions by allowing roots to grow down into un-compacted soil.

In addition, the plants are growing above ground, increasing their exposure to light. The result – up to 400% increase in yield!

To complement this garden and to help families achieve their goal of self sufficiency, Burgon & Ball, in association with the RHS, have produced an attractive wall chart full of information and advice on how to plan your own 5-a-Day Garden, available available to all visitors to the show and the RHS Wisley Plant Centre.
